Baseball Cards in Baseball Caps

March 4, 2010

These are some of the baseball cards we inserted inside our baseball caps (sideways) to help shape the classic look that every ball-playing kid in 1958-1959 shot for:

Of course, when you crammed in too many cards, there were consequences. My brother learned this first-hand. He was pitching for a Little League minor level team when he was about 8 or 9 years old. I can’t remember the exact situation – maybe the wind was acting up that day – but his hat fell off and a dozen or so cards littered the field. The umpire called time as he chased cards all over the mound. Some blew into shallow centerfield. Sitting in the grandstand, I covered my face with my glove and quietly slipped off to hide out at the Snack Bar until the crowd’s laughter subsided.

It should be noted, however, that my brother always had the coolest-looking hat with a crease at the top no one could match.
