Sandlot Baseball – Red Sox and September Hope, 1967

(Continuing series of the 1967 Red Sox “Impossible Dream” season)

On the September 23, 1967, the Patriot Ledger posted this picture of Reggie Smith and Jose Santiago after splitting a double-header the day before with the Baltimore Orioles. As you can see, the Sox were a half game behind Minnesota with 6 games left to play. Hopes were high in Beantown and even higher on the sandlots of Braintree. We aging sandlotters, now 16  and 17  years old, were experiencing our very first pennant run and there was nothing like it. Championships were always won by teams like the Yankees or Dodgers. But the Red Sox? C’mon. We kept pinching ourselves because we could not believe what was happening. We were hopeful, but very cautious about getting too carried away. After all, they were the Red Sox…
